Ebenezer lived in Sterling, Massachusetts, and made his living as a tailor of men’s apparel. It was on a winter’s night in 1863 that his wife was sitting at the dining room table trying to cut out a dress for their daughter. She became exasperated with the awkward task. “It would be a lot easier to do this if I had some kind of pattern to guide me,” she fumed. Ebenezer had been quietly reading, but her comment interrupted his story.

Hetty Green was a mean-spirited, tightfisted, and very shrewd woman! Born Henrietta Howland Robinson in 1835, she is listed in Guiness Book of World Records as the greatest of misers. Hetty’s father, Edward Mott Robinson, and her aunt Sylvia Ann Howland both died in 1865, leaving her an inheritance of nearly $10 million (worth some $185 million in today’s dollars). Hetty immediately began investing in the financial markets, scoring her first major success after the Civil War as she bought depreciated U.S. government bonds from skittish investors. Her philosophy was simple: “Buy cheap and sell dear”–and she had an instinct for knowing when which was which!

His name is John G. Stackhouse, Jr. His book is entitled, Humble Apologetics Defending the Faith Today (Oxford University Press, 2002). And his message is loud and clear. Christianity will hold up to any religion, but what’s the point if I win the argument for faith in Christ and fail to demonstrate the very humility of Christ in my defense? In other words, I can win the argument but lose the endorsement—“I don’t care that you answered all my questions, your arrogance is repulsive.”

It is said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, each time expecting a different outcome. You and I know that reality says otherwise. If you expect a different result, you must change your current actions. Change is necessary. It is human; however, it’s not always easy.
