Ebenezer lived in Sterling, Massachusetts, and made his living as a tailor of men’s apparel. It was on a winter’s night in 1863 that his wife was sitting at the dining room table trying to cut out a dress for their daughter. She became exasperated with the awkward task. “It would be a lot easier to do this if I had some kind of pattern to guide me,†she fumed. Ebenezer had been quietly reading, but her comment interrupted his story.
